Photovoltaic Solar Systems break down into two major types.

•     Grid-tie solar installation where the system ties into the power grid pulling only the power not being supplied by the PV array. This type of installation doesn't require batteries or charge controllers.
•     Off grid solar installation were you are your power source with a battery bank acting as the storage medium for excess power generated by the array. To avoid hugely expensive battery banks during those extended periods with enough sunlight to meet your energy requirements these systems are often combined with another stand alone power source such as a wind turbine or diesel generator set to cover any power generation shortfalls

Wind Power Turbine can be either grid tie or off grid, but is usually combined with another power source for those periods without adequate wind to produce enough power. Always bear in mind, If you don’t have 10mph average winds, you don’t have a wind resource.
